MTL Fish Curers Ltd moved into its current premises in 1982 and has successfully built a very efficient service and loyal relationship with its customers over the past 30 years.
The building occupied by the company is thought to be the oldest curing house on the docks, dating back to the 1880s. It is a typical example of the original smokehouses where the chimneys were built in the back corner of the building.
Ian Button, the current proprietor, joined MTL as a school leaver in 1984 and became a partner in 1997. Ian finally took over the business in 2005 and prides himself on the fact that he buys the best possible haddock and cod every morning from Grimsby Fish Market.

At MTL Ian has the product filleted on the premises and cures and packs every fillet himself, ensuring its high standard so that he can be perfectly happy with every fillet of traditional smoked fish he sells.
Nearly all of the smoked fish sold by Ian is delivered by one of the many fish vans departing Grimsby Docks every day. Due to the small size of MTL Fish Curers (the smallest of the Grimsby Traditional Fish Smokers Group) means selling large quantities to wholesalers has never been on the agenda. Instead, he relies on the knowledgeable and quality insistent van men to buy and distribute his product.
A large part of MTL’s continued success is owing to the relationship that has been built up over the last 20 years with Regal Fish Supplies Ltd. Regal specialise in supplying top quality fish all over the country on a daily basis.
Delivered in temperature controlled vans, using telesales and it’s website to receive orders, this very efficient, friendly service, guarantees MTL Fish Curers Ltd can get their fish bought and smoked one day, then into peoples homes the next.
