Grimsby Traditional Smoked Fish Wins PGI Status!
The European Union has awarded Grimsby Traditional Smoked Fish PGI status. This follows a campaign by the GTFS Group began in the 1990s.
A Protected Geographical Indication means that only fish produced in Grimsby using the traditional method can be called Grimsby Traditional Smoked Fish. To use this name, producers must be audited by the Trading Standards Institute on behalf of DEFRA and the European Union to make sure their practices comply with specific criteria that defines the traditional smoking process. The Grimsby Traditional Fish Smokers Group, which consists of producers who are licensed to use the name, advise the Trading Standards Institute and DEFRA on the regulation and legal use of the name and the use of the PGI logo.
